On my first run, I chose sword and gave up shield. I never got hit that often so I found defense to be quite pointless...
On my second and third time, I chose staff and gave up sword. You get more MP when you finish the game. It's not that I'm a major magic user... It's because it makes me feel elite once I finish the game because I have more MP than everyone else. :D Quoted for emphasis.

Well I would agree that I use some of the new spells I acquire a few times just for fun, but then I get bored of them. I'll use Thundaga to clear out an open area of small enemies quickly, and then cure to cure. So I see your point. |

Only ones I used were Stop, and it's ungrades for the fight on that Phantom at the Big Ben in Peter Pan land, to stop the hands on the clock. That bought you time in the fight :p, and of course Cure.
